A Person-Centred Care Guideline: The Future of Healthcare in Ontario

Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) has released a Person-Centred Care (PCC) Guideline, developed in partnership with the Program in Evidence-Based Care (PEBC), outlining a level of care delivery that any person (i.e., patient, family member, caregiver) accessing adult oncology services in Ontario should expect to receive.

CCO is committed to advancing a person-centred approach to care in Ontario. To achieve this, the PCC Guideline was developed with the goal of improving the patient experience through a core set of expectations for the way care is coordinated and provided. Although cancer-specific, many principles in the PCC Guideline are relevant in all settings and can directly impact the person-centredness of your practice.

The Guideline has 65 recommendations divided into five key areas:

  • Knowing the patient as an individual
  • Essential requirements of care
  • Tailoring healthcare service for each patient
  • Continuity of care and relationships
  • Enabling patients to actively participate in their care

These recommendations will provide the framework to help drive a person-centred care approach to the delivery and standard of cancer care in Ontario. To help you better understand how this approach contributes to an improved the experience for each of your patients, CCO has also developed a PCC video. The video defines PCC, and explains how we as a health system can work together to bring it to life.

The PCC Guideline is an adaptation of content from the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NHS) published in 2012, entitled: Patient experience in adult NHS services: improving the experience of care for people using adult NHS services. With this framework, and by working in partnership with diverse stakeholders, including patients, family members, and caregivers, CCO was able to leverage expertise at the table in evidentiary review, clinical knowledge, planning, measurement, and reporting to identify key practices and behaviors that define PCC.
