Medical radiation technologists (MRTs) who perform screening mammography have a special role in the healthcare of the public. MRTs must be highly competent practitioners excelling in their ability to produce quality images and to manage the patient with care and expertise in a highly technical environment.
Purpose of the Program
The Certificate in Breast Imaging – Screening (CBIS) program is designed to provide a means that will provide knowledge and clinical competence recognized by a credential that will be sought after by technologists and encouraged and advocated for by employers.
The following is an overview of the Certificate in Breast Imaging – Screening program. For detailed information, download the Program Handbook.
There are two components to the CBI – Screening program: didactic and clinical*.
*The clinical component is available to registered candidates only.
The clinical component for the CBIS is a practicum in screening mammography that requires the candidate to be practicing in mammography under the supervisor of a clinical advisor and must:
- Perform a minimum of 750 mammograms (2 view bilateral, CC, MLO)
- Complete a Summary of Clinical Competence (SCC)
The SCC is a list of procedures and associated competencies that must be assessed by a Clinical Advisor. SCCs that are deemed incomplete are subject to a $50 resubmission fee.
The clinical component requires the candidate to identify a clinical advisor. The Clinical Advisor must:
- Be a medical radiation technologist practicing in mammography
- Have a minimum of three years experience in the practice of mammography
- Not be currently registered in either CBIS or CBID Certificate Programs
A clinical advisor with a Certificate in Breast Imaging is preferred but not mandatory.
Candidates in the CBIS Program must complete both the didactic and clinical components within a three-year timeframe. This time frame begins with the acceptance into the CBIS Program.
Candidates who successfully complete the didactic and clinical components as per the CBIS program requirements will receive a Certificate in Breast Imaging – Screening and can use the CBIS credential.
The Committee strongly advocates for continued competence through continuing professional development.
