Computed Tomography Imaging Specialty Certificate Program

Computed Tomography is a common imaging modality in the field of medical imaging. With the onset of fusion imaging, CT is now crossing all disciplines. The CAMRT is pleased to offer a CT Imaging Specialty Certificate in the disciplines of Radiological Technology, Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine. All technologists and therapists practicing in dedicated CT, CT SIM, PET/CT or SPECT/CT will find this program informative, educational and practical. It will enhance your knowledge and skill, enabling you to provide ‘best practice’ care in the delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic healthcare services.

The CTIC Specialty Program is an educational opportunity to enhance your theoretical and clinical skills in CT Imaging and does not “certify” you to work as a MRT in Canada. If you wish to practice in Canada, please refer to our Certification Section of the website for more information.

Program Overview

There are two components of the CTIC (CT Imaging Certificate) program – a didactic and clinical component.

Program Flowchart

Note: Candidate must complete both the didactic and clinical components within a five year time frame. This time frame begins on the date of successful completion of the first course used towards the CTIC didactic component.

1. Didactic Component

The didactic portion consists of 3 CT imaging courses and a discipline specific supplement, which cover the essential knowledge listed in the program syllabus found in the CTIC Handbooks.

Full Length Course Registration Form

Prior Learning Assessments Recognition (PLAR)
For CT courses taken through other recognized Canadian educational institutions can be submitted to the CTIC committee for recognition. A pass of 75% on the final exam for the courses must be achieved.  The standard CAMRT course review fee will apply to each course submitted for review and determine PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment Recognition). The results of the assessment will be sent to the candidate.

Prior Learning Assessment Application Form

Important: When submitting courses for prior learning assessments, please include: the fee, course materials, course syllabus, transcripts and assignments for each course that is being reviewed.

Discipline Specific Supplements
The discipline – specific supplemental course recently has been added to the program and provides an advanced level of learning in the application of CT in the specific discipline. This supplemental course must be completed prior to completing the clinical component of the Specialty Certificate. These supplements are approximately 40 pages long and include a self-administered post quiz. The answer sheet will be provided within the educational materials. This can be purchased at any time within the year and do not follow our academic term deadlines.  Please note that a 75% or higher must be achieved on the self-administered quiz. No-rewrites are available for the supplements to access the post-quiz again; the specific quick self study must be purchased.

Radiological Technology
CT Colonography
This supplement to the CT courses provides a more comprehensive study of CT colonography. Discussed in detail are the theory and protocols required for CT colonography, which is rapidly replacing the barium enema and has become an important adjunct to conventional colonoscopy.

Radiation Therapy
CT Simulation
This supplement reviews the design and components of the CT Simulator and the process of CT simulation.  This supplement will also provide an overview of advanced CT Simulation procedures.  The course has been designed to enhance the knowledge of the RTT working in the CT Simulator; it is assumed that the RT has knowledge of the basic principles of a CT scanner.

Nuclear Medicine
PET Theory, PET/CT & SPECT/CT Imaging
This supplement reviews the use and relevance of CT in Nuclear Medicine.  This supplement will also provide an overview of PET systems, and examines some relevant tracers from the field of positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals.  The course has been designed to enhance the knowledge of the RTNM working in PET/CT and/or SPECT/CT; it is assumed that the technologist has knowledge of the basic principles of a CT scanner.

Quick Self Study (Supplement) Registration Form

Important: The discipline specific supplements do not require an invigilator. The post quiz is self-administered.

2. Clinical Component

The clinical component requires verification of clinical competency by completing a Summary of Clinical Competence and 16 week CT clinical experience.

Candidates entering the CTIC Program must complete both the didactic and clinical components within a five-year time frame. This time frame begins on the date of successful completion of the first CT course used toward the CTIC program. See the CTIC Handbook for details on important timeframes.

To register for the CT Imaging Clinical Component please download the form and fax it with your credit card or mail your form with a cheque.

CTIC Program News & Updates (Updated on November 2008)

CT Imaging Certificate Program will be open to non-members and internationals MRT’s.

The CAMRT and CTIC Committee are excited to announce that this educational program is now available to Non-Members and International MRT’s who have interest in enhancing their CT skills. Refer to the Handbook for your specific discipline for information on how to register into the CT Imaging Certificate Specialty Program.

Cardiac CT Supplement

The Cardiac CT Supplement is projected to be released by September 2009. Details will follow in the near future. Currently, for the discipline of Radiological Technology, the supplement required for complete the CTIC Specialty Program in Radiological Technology is CT Colonography only.

Discipline Specific Supplements are also available to everyone!

CAMRT also provides the CTIC supplements as a stand alone Quick Self Studies. To register refer to the Quick Self Studies section of the website.
