I would like to express again my sincere appreciation and thanks to the selection committee of the CAMRTF for their contribution towards my Masters Degree in Radiation Therapy. As an active member of both the CAMRT and the OAMRT, this financial assistance has strengthened my resolve to continue volunteering and promoting the profession of Medical Radiation Technology. I have now completed 30 credits towards my Masters (only 150 to go!) and this grant helped to cover the costs of my first year. Thank you again.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Bunch MRT(T) BSc

I am honoured to be the recipient of the “Leaders of Tomorrow” Scholarship. I would like to thank the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists Foundation and Canadian Nuclear Safety Services Inc.

It is a great joy to be recognized for my academic achievement and community involvement. As a final year radiation therapy student at Laurentian University, I rely on financial aid, grants and student loans to help finance my education. This scholarship will help reduce my financial burden and allow me to focus on becoming a healthcare professional.

I am grateful for the opportunities this award will provide me. Your generosity has made a profound impact on my life and I am truly grateful to be the recipient of the “Leaders of Tomorrow” Scholarship.

Thank you once again,

Corina Geteianc

I would like to pass along a sincere thank you to the CAMRT Foundation!

I am very appreciative that the Foundation values life-long learning as much as I do. It would have been very difficult to pursue my continuing education without the generous support of the CAMRT Foundation! I am a post-diploma student working to achieve my Bachelor of Health Science degree in Radiological Technology. It is difficult to balance financial responsibilities as well as making my educational goals a priority. The generous support of the CAMRT Foundation will make this goal attainable.

The monetary support is much valued as is the moral support that comes from the Foundation as well. It is sometimes difficult to keep motivated when there are so many competing priorities but when there is added support from family and friends and from the CAMRT Foundation, there is extra motivation to keep going and keep doing well. I cannot express just how appreciative I am.

I have in the past and will continue well into the future to volunteer in my provincial association as well as the CAMRT.

As I said I am a strong believer in life-long continuing education and am proud to be a part of an association that has the same values.
Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Michelle Hayden, R.T.R

I would like to thank the Foundation for considering my request for the William Doern Training Scholarship. The criterion for the award was to demonstrate volunteerism at the provincial or national level for the Medical Technologists profession and have a child enter the MRT program. After reading the biography of William Doern I am humbled. That any one member could do so much for our profession is outstanding.
My contribution was miniscule in comparison; however my enthusiasm for my career choice ‘rubbed off’ on one of my three children. My daughter, Anna, has now graduated, with honors, from the BCIT program and is gainfully employed as an MRT in Kamloops, B.C.

I have spent my life volunteering for many organizations (much to my husbands dismay!...what? you’re the President again?!!) and already my daughter has taken up the cause. She presented a humorous and poignant presentation on the life of a student to the Interior Health managers meeting in April ’08. She has been asked to do a presentation at BCIT, SAIT and NAIT in the spring of 2009.

I have enjoyed my time spent on various committees for the BCAMRT and will continue to stay involved.

Thank you again.
Sincerely,

Loretta Robinson RTR, RDMS

Many thanks to the C.A.M.R.T. Foundation!

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the C.A.M.R.T. Foundation for their very generous support and contribution to my continued learning. The foundation grant I received has enabled me to continue with my formalized studies in the pursuit of a graduate degree in education. Accomplishing this goal would have been extremely difficult if not for the provision of the grant. As with most parents, we put the needs of our children first. I presently have one child attending university and another will be pursuing post-secondary education in the very near future. As you can well imagine, the costs associated with three family members attending school are significant! If this grant had not been available, I would have put my needs to the very bottom of the list.

The degree I am pursuing will help me develop my knowledge and skills in educational program design, development, evaluation and administration, all very pertinent to the field of Radiation Therapy education.

A mandatory requirement, after receiving a grant, includes a two-year commitment to volunteer in the professional association. Presently, I am Chair of the Exam Validation Committee, Radiation Therapy. I have been involved, in various capacities, with the C.A.M.R.T. for over ten years and the opportunities and learning I have acquired through this involvement are immeasurable.

Again, thank you to the C.A.M.R.T. Foundation and the donors for providing this type of assistance to our members! It is so appreciated.
Sincerely,

Tracey Hill

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am writing this letter to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to the Donor(s) and CAMRT Foundation Selection Committee for the William Doern Training Scholarship. I recently received this award for use during my second year in the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at SAIT. You have my sincere apologies for this letter taking so long to arrive at your office; I have been very busy this summer and definitely meant to send you a thank-you far earlier than I did, but better late than never.

Receiving this award was highly encouraging, and meant a great deal to me. I worked very hard during my first year to obtain a GPA between 3.83 and 4.0, which was a goal I had set at the beginning of the program, and I succeeded. If not for the support of donors like you, it would be much more difficult to concentrate on my studies to the extent needed to obtain these grades.

I have a fair amount of experience in health care behind me, and I am looking forward to contributing even further to the field of Medical Radiation Technology when I receive my new diploma. I would very much like to become an expert in my field, as well as to be actively involved in my professional associations, as my mother has before me in the fields of X-Ray and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. You are helping me to achieve that goal. I appreciate the support given to students who have chosen to follow in the footsteps of their parents by entering the MRT field.

This award will considerably ease financial pressures for the coming year as well, as I will be able to work less and focus more on my studies. It also means a great deal to me to be recognized for the hard work that I have put in so far, and will continue to do. I hope that other MRT students will have your continued support, and would like to thank you personally, as well as for the entire MRT student community, for your recognition and support of the importance of post-secondary education.

Once again, thank you very much!

Sincerely,
Jacqueline Bague

Dear Trustees of the CAMRT Foundation and Canadian Nuclear Safety Services Inc.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the “Leaders of Tomorrow” Scholarship of academic excellence and community service. As this year’s recipient, I am grateful for the opportunities this award will provide me. Throughout my studies I have often had to work two jobs to pay for my living expenses. Despite this charged schedule, I have maintained excellent grades and served my community. My most valued work has been in the service of others—be it tutoring students at Dawson College in chemistry and physics, serving in the Canadian military as a reservist, or working as an assistant in the Radiation Oncology Department of the Montreal General Hospital. Receiving this scholarship will help reduce my financial burdens and provide much needed assistance as I pursue an internship in my third year of studies. Upon completion of my diploma I would like to find employment in a hospital as a Radiation Therapist and pursue a higher education in physics.

I would also like to thank Jocelyn Napis-Pheiffer and Elias Katsaros for encouraging me to apply, as well as Dr. Podgorsak who has been very encouraging and inspirational.

Once again, to the CAMRT Foundation and Canadian Nuclear Safety Services, thank you for supporting students in Radiology Technical Studies.

Your generosity truly makes a difference.

Sincerely,
Sandra Judge

I want to write and thank you and the foundation for your generous support of my educational pursuit of a doctorate in education. As you are aware, graduate degrees are not cheap but I am committed to complete this and with the CAMRT foundation grant, this years cost have been greatly reduced (thank you). I am looking for other possible funding opportunities but have no success other than the foundation grant at this point, but I will continue to apply. I just completed my year 1 residency and at present I am taking more online courses. The courses last 8 weeks and are quite intense but I love the learning and soak up as much as I can. Soon I will be searching for a topic for my dissertation, being a professional doctorate this will be related to medical radiation technology which means that the profession of medical radiation technology as a whole will also benefit from your support as I will produce some original research which I hope will be useful to those who follow us over the years.

The foundation work to raise funds and provide scholarships for medical radiation technologists is to be applauded. I appreciate that many volunteer hours and dedicated service go into the foundation from the board of directors and its supporters. I just want you to know that your efforts are greatly appreciated and while I am rather busy at present, I am happy to support the foundation in anyway I can in the future

Thank you again.

Sincerely,
Fiona

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CAMRT Foundation for their financial support and lovely letter of encouragement. This was in response to my application for assistance with tuition fees for a PhD in Health Science through Charles Sturt University in Australia (commenced February 2007).

I have been working as a Radiation Therapist for close to 20 years now, though it seems like only yesterday that I received my Diploma. We all work in an environment of constant change and never cease to learn, but it was just several years ago that distance education enabled me to gain a BSc, then an MSc and now apply for a PhD. These opportunities are available to all of us, but unfortunately require time and money - be encouraged however that the CAMRT Foundation is willing and able to help. The only condition is a two-year commitment to our national or provincial association. I am even finding this commitment to be valuable in itself since the experience is giving me insight into our profession, which is not only widening my horizons but useful for my studies.

The CAMRT Foundation has not only helped me in a tangible financial way, but has also given me much appreciated moral support. During my PhD I will have to explore many sources of assistance, but none will mean more to me than this vote of confidence from my own profession’s national association.

Thank-you!
Valerie Kelly MRT(T), CMD, MSc.

I would like to sincerely thank the CAMRT Foundation committee for awarding me a Member’s Grant.

I have just started a 6-year program to complete a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences and, because I am studying by distance education, I am not eligible for the usual Doctoral research grants and university tuition support. Therefore, the funds from the CAMRT Foundation Member’s grant have saved me from significant financial hardship while pursuing my PhD.

It is particularly wonderful to be supported by my peers in this way, and I am very grateful to the committee. Until recently, I was unaware that a grant like this existed for radiation therapists. It enables us to enroll in further education without concerns regarding high tuition fees. The application process is short and straightforward, and I would encourage any radiation therapist considering higher education to apply for this fantastic resource.

I commend the CAMRT Foundation for providing such a valuable service to its membership. These funds will remove the financial barrier from many members who would like to embark upon life-long learning experiences of all kinds. This will undoubtedly result in substantial enrichment of the whole profession as well as its individual practitioners.

Yours Sincerely
Tara Rosewall MRT(T), MSc.

The William Doern Training Scholarship is gratefully accepted on behalf of my son, who is currently in the Radiation Therapy training program.

Years ago, when many of us were studying in this field, we were provided with a monthly bursary to help with expenses through the student years. Students in our programs have very little access to scholarship funding, and without the "university summers" to earn money, have very little opportunity to subsidize the ever increasing cost of tuition and living expenses.

In addition, we are now actively recruiting and requiring university graduates, so many of the students entering our field have already been at university for at least 4 years. In order to entice these highly qualified and talented individuals into our profession, and to help them cope with increasing costs, incentives such as the William Doern Fund are much appreciated.

I think that it is critical that we work hard to provide additional sources of funding for our students. At this point in time, these very well educated individuals are faced with a myriad of choices for professions, funding opportunities and and career paths. I feel that it is very important for us to challenge ourselves to aid in the recruitment of the best candidates, help them through this critical phase, and hopefully they will be joining us and challenging themselves in the future with ongoing educational opportunities and the advancement of their professional practice.

Respectfully,
Debbie Mallett, RTT-ACT

2006 Testimonials

On behalf of myself and Tania I would like to thank the CAMRT Foundation for the opportunity of applying for scholarships and for the support of children of CAMRT members. Since Tania does not qualify for all scholarships and funding this was a great chance for her to get some financial support. The intense program makes it hard to obtain employment, this scholarship relieved some of the stress so she could concentrate on school.

This William Doern Training Scholarship has helped Tania towards her Medical Radiological training. She is currently enrolled in the SAIT class 2005-2007 and will be graduating in May.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for the educational grant I received from the CAMRT Foundation. The grant will cover a significant amount of my tuition. It is so refreshing and encouraging having such a supportive group as the CAMRT Foundation backing my education. As an employee and a person seeking personal educational goals, I am proud to be a part of the CAMRT of who has a primary agenda in the continuing education of its members.

In such an evolving industry as radiotherapy, it is important to keep abreast of new and up and coming technologies. Again, my sincere thanks to the CAMRT Foundation for supporting me in my efforts at becoming the best I can be in my chosen profession.

Sincerely,

It is a great feeling to have the support an organization such as the CAMRT. I applied for a foundation grant to further my university studies at the master's level, and to my surprise and pleasure, I was awarded a grant. The award practically covers a credit but more importantly it gave me the nudge needed to pursue a program knowing that I had committed not just to myself but to the CAMRT.

Thank you

2005 Testimonials

August 29, 2005

I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the CAMRT Foundation for the $1000 William Doern Training Scholarship which has been awarded to my daughter, Lindsey. She is currently doing the practicum portion of the MRT program through NAIT in Edmonton, Alberta. Lindsey is thoroughly enjoying the MRT program and is doing very well. She finds it most interesting and rewarding career.

This scholarship came at the most opportune time, just as another semester’s tuition was coming due. It’s extremely helpful during these times of high tuition rates and will allow her to spend less time at her part time job and more time at her studies.

Like many CAMRT members, I was unaware of the CAMRT Foundation and how it could benefit me. The Foundation is a branch of the CAMRT, which offers financial assistance to members for courses, education sessions and research pertinent to Medical Radiation Technology. It also offers training scholarships to children of members, who are enrolled to an MRT program.

As I mentioned, I was unaware of the Foundation and it’s benefits until there was a write-up in our provincial AAMRT newsletter, where I was encouraged by our Assistant Clinical Instructor, at the U of A Hospital, to apply for a training scholarship for my daughter. I will definitely be encouraging my co-workers to apply to the Foundation for funding for their continuing education in the future.

Once again, on behalf of my daughter, Lindsey, thank you very much for the training scholarship. It’s just one of the many ways we can benefit by being CAMRT members.

Yours truly,
Karen Steinke, RTR

2004 Testimonials

October 7, 2004

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to the CAMRT Foundation for their generous contribution towards my most recent educational undertakings. The Foundation has provided me with not only financial but moral support to complete my graduate degree in distance education from Alberta's Athabasca University. My personal commitment to life-long learning has been encouraged in a tangible way by this organization, for which I am truly grateful.

It has been my pleasure and honor to serve this professional body as a volunteer both provincially and nationally for the past 30 years. My involvement with the CAMRT has afforded me countless opportunities to learn new things about this amazing field of practice. More importantly, the kindred spirits I have had the pleasure of interacting with over the years I have come to count among my closest friends, spanning the country from coast to coast.

As dean of the health sciences programs at the College of the North Atlantic in the province of NL, as well as chair of the Committee On Education (COE) for Radiography (RT) within the CAMRT, I have both opportunity and license to support the role of this professional association. CAMRT sets the benchmark for entry to practice in this country for medical radiation technologists of all disciplines represented by this organization. We adhere to a standard of excellence that all members can be proud of, and part of that commitment to excellence manifests itself in awards such as those granted by the CAMRT Foundation which promote professional development initiatives among our own members.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to the CAMRT Foundation for their acknowledgment and support.

Sincerely,
Irene M. O'Brien, AC(R)., M.Ed.
Dean, Health Science Programs
College of the North Atlantic
Chair, COE Radiography (RT)

I just wanted to take a moment to thank the board of directors for the grant money I received. It was used to help pay for my B.Sc. in Radiography (Therapeutic). I took my Bachelor's through Anglia Polytechnic University in the U.K. through correspondence.

I believe continuing education is very important in our field as technology and treatments are changing rapidly. This provided me the opportunity to improve my knowledge in the field of Radiation Therapy. It also allowed me to obtain my Bachelor of Science with my diploma used for credits towards the degree.

I strongly recommend applying to the grant foundation. I was not aware that the CAMRT provided educational assistance until it was brought to my attention. It is a great way to help with the financial aspect of continuing education.

Once again, thank you very much for the funding.

Sincerely,

Janelle Szafron BSc RTT

I would like to thank the C.A.M.R.T. Foundation Board of Directors for awarding me $2000.00 in support of my research project, "Variation in the Documentation of Immobilization Devices Used for the Treatment of T1N0 Glottic Cancer from 1990-1995 in Ontario, Canada." This project was the final component of my Bachelor of Science Honours degree in therapeutic radiography through Anglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge, England. I completed the project in April and in the past week received confirmation of my BSC9Hons) award.

As anyone who has a child in university or college knows, tuition fees are only one part of the cost of a higher education. The support of the C.A.M.R.T. Foundation grant program has helped to offset the financial cost of my personal professional development. I strongly recommend that any medical radiation technologist who is considering furthering their education or exploring a research opportunity apply to the C.A.M.R.T. foundation for support.

In addition, I have also availed myself of the practical, flexible and affordable C.A.M.R.T. correspondence courses. Over the years I have applied for and received assistance from my employer (Kingston Regional cancer centre) for tuition and textbooks. I supplied the hard work studying but the dividends seem endless.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the radiation therapists from across the province of Ontario and in particular, Kingston, for their support of my pursuit of higher education. They have contributed in so many ways through expert advice, interviews, distributing surveys and completing surveys to name only a few. I have not done this alone. To those of you who think that you might like to try furthering your professional development; you won't be alone either.

Lynda Jackson M.R.T. (T.), AC(T), BSc(Hons)

Making the decision to return to school while working full-time is a tough one. Adding the financial pressures of the cost of the courses makes it even harder. I was very grateful to have the financial pressures removed by receiving funds from the CAMRT Foundation to offset the cost of earning my degree.

I think it's great that as a member of a professional association, I have access to funding to help further my career and education goals. The condition of having recipients give a two-year commitment to either their national or provincial association in return for this funding, is a simple one to satisfy. I look forward to serving my term as VP on the Board of Directors of the OAMRT in return for the support I received. I encourage all CAMRT members to consider this program.

I have written this testimonial about the purpose of the CAMRT and have raised some knowledge about the Foundation for CAMRT members.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to CAMRT and all of its members in granting me a cheque from the CAMRT Foundation Grant Fund. Not only does the CAMRT support continuing education by offering correspondence courses, specialty courses, and advanced courses, but it also supports professional certification and development under the umbrella of medical radiation technology.

As an award winner and CAMRT member, I can attest to the value and function of the CAMRT. We, as members have a wealth of information and resources at our fingertips. Whether we are looking for information on social, political or technological issues affecting us or whether we are seeking job opportunities and initiatives, we can find all of this information through the four disciplines of the CAMRT which include Radiological Technologists, Radiation Therapists, Nuclear Medicine Technologists, and Magnetic Resonance Technologists.

Most of the issues affecting us are published in The Canadian Journal of Medical Radiation Technology that is produced by CAMRT. Articles are accepted by members and non-members. All voices can be heard and any issue can be raised. Don't go unnoticed! Ask for what you want and who knows, you just might receive. That's what I did and the CAMRT was able to help me out tremendously. Thanks again to all of the members, the Members of the Board, and the CAMRT for this very generous award.

Sincerely,
