2023 CAMRT-BC Award Recipients
The Member Recognition and Awards Program was established by CAMRT-BC to showcase the talent and professionalism of CAMRT-BC members and students enrolled in accredited medical radiation technology education programs. We are pleased to recognize this year’s award recipients.
Bracco Paragon Award
The CAMRT-BC is pleased to present this award to Heeweon Joo, RTR
This award is provided by Bracco IMAGING Canada each year to the CAMRT-BC member who achieved the highest score on the certification exam across all disciplines.
Heeweon achieved the highest score among all CAMRT-BC members who wrote a certification exam in 2022.
After completing his medical radiography diploma from Camosun College in 2022, he successfully achieved his CAMRT certification in Radiological Technology in 2022. He now works as a Medical Imaging Technologist at Island Health.
The next awards are determined by nomination. Members of the advisory council reviewed the nominations, and we are pleased to present four member recognition awards.
Award of Excellence
The Award of Excellence is presented to individuals who consistently demonstrate excellence in technical proficiency and innovation. While never compromising patient care, the recipients of this award ensure every procedure is carried out to the highest possible standard. These individuals are respected by their coworkers for the care and attention in performing all procedures.
There are two recipients for the Award of Excellence this year.
The CAMRT-BC is pleased to present the Award of Excellence – Radiological Technology to Sherri Bacon, RTR
“In the face of staff shortages, she has consistently exhibited an unwavering commitment to maintaining productivity, upholding team morale, and ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality work. Her ability to remain composed under pressure and swiftly adapt to changing circumstances has been a source of inspiration for us all.
She consistently leads by example, showing dedication and a strong work ethic that motivates the entire team. Her approachability encourages open communication, allowing team members to share their concerns, ideas, and feedback, fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual support.
Amid the challenges posed by staff shortages, her ability to think outside the box has not only helped us maintain our performance but has also led to improvements that will have a lasting impact on our department.
I wholeheartedly endorse her nomination and believe that her contributions should be acknowledged and celebrated.”
The CAMRT-BC is pleased to present the Award of Excellence – Magnetic Resonance to Heather Harms, RTR, RTMR
“She is by far the most conscientious person I have ever worked with, and I have been a tech for 31 years. She arrives early every single shift and is truly dedicated to the patient in every way. She is very compassionate, professional, and thorough. She routinely goes above and beyond for each case, checking safety screening, looking up prior studies and reports. Her decision making is always in the best interest of the patient. Her work habits are second to none. Our team jokes about the rest of us trying to keep up with her for cleaning and stocking as she is so efficient, we almost have to race her to get to a task first! She has a growth mindset and is continually learning more about becoming the best MRI technologist she can be. I truly believe she is the most deserving recipient of this award.”
Excellence in Teaching Award
This award is presented to an MRT who demonstrates outstanding contributions in enhancing the teaching and learning experience of students during their educational program. The recipient of this award actively engages students within the academic and/or clinical environment. This individual remains up to date with practice standards and ensures students aspire to reach their full potential.
The CAMRT-BC is pleased to present this award to Megan Kan, RTMR
One of her students shared:
“Despite teaching physics, her class is everyone’s favourite because of her approach to teaching. She makes herself available to all students and has added to our knowledge and learning in multiple aspects of our learning, not just the content she teaches.
She is a fierce advocate for patient care and the imaging of pacemakers in MR, passing that passion and knowledge onto her students which I think is a critical component of becoming a responsible technologist who understands the importance of their role in healthcare. The program would be greatly diminished if she was not a part of it. She is respectful, clear, has an incredible work ethic and (in my opinion, the most important aspect) the amount of compassion she shows to her students and patients is why I believe she deserves to be awarded for her excellence in teaching.”

“She has helped me so much. I have been doing well in physics since getting extra help from her. She is so nice and so willing to help. She reminds us we shouldn’t let our marks establish our self-worth, and she is a very caring person. She goes above and beyond any teacher I have had before!”
Innovative Leader Award
This award is presented to an MRT who has demonstrated excellence in leadership. The recipient of this award may hold a formal leadership position or may demonstrate leadership within their work/professional environment. This individual has earned the respect of coworkers through their efforts to contribute to the practice of excellence within their department/organization. They exemplify professional leadership by upholding the values of Medical Radiation Technologists. Through their efforts, there is a significant impact on the advancement of excellence in MRT practice.
The CAMRT-BC is pleased to present this award to Katelin Young, RTR, CTIC
Her co-workers describe her as follows:
“I would like to nominate my supervisor for the Innovative Leadership award. She graduated from BCIT from the Medical Radiography program in 2014, became CT certified through the CAMRT in 2016 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences from TRU in 2020. She has completed various leadership and project management courses through VCH including the Frontline Leadership Program.
Early in her career, she became the evening supervisor for general radiography and CT. This was a new position for the department, and she helped shape the position and gave more structure and guidance in the evening. During the height of the pandemic, she temporarily became the CT cross-site supervisor where she made a significant impact on myself and the department, which is why I am nominating her for this award.
Her leadership during the COVID pandemic was exemplary. She recognized the impact that the pandemic was having on mental health and well-being and took steps to support our team members. Holding regular meetings where we could discuss our feelings and suggestions and creating workplace games such as CT bingo helped provide a safe space and boosted morale.
During significant CT staff shortages, she worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone had the resources they needed to continue providing the best patient care effectively and efficiently. She worked many hours of overtime to ensure that staff felt supported and adjusted schedules and shuffled staff. Through her hard work and dedication, she was able to guide our team through this difficult period and emerge stronger together on the other side.
She is an exceptional leader in our department even now that she has returned to her evening supervisor role. The impact she had on the department during a truly difficult time deserves to be recognized. Stepping into this role during the middle of a pandemic, extreme staffing shortages and low morale was not an easy task. She is an invaluable asset to the department and made a difference to myself and others. I am proud to be a part of her team and feel she deserves to be the recipient of the Innovative Leadership award.”
