CT Operation


SUBJECT

Operation of the Computed Tomography (CT) for dedicated procedures, fusion imaging and treatment planning

CAMRT POSITION
The operation of a dedicated CT unit or any CT unit being used in the same manner as a stand-alone dedicated unit for diagnostic purposes is within the scope of practice of a radiological technologist only.

The operation of a CT Sim unit for treatment planning is within the scope of practice of a radiation therapist.

The operation of CT unit as part of hybrid equipment for the purpose of fusion imaging for PET/CT and SPECT/CT is within the scope of practice of a nuclear medicine technologist.

RATIONALE
Knowledge, skill and judgment are required to ensure safe and effective practice and therefore the appropriate level of diagnostic and therapy services to patients and healthcare colleagues.

Currently the knowledge, skill, and judgment required to operate these different units is rooted in the knowledge, skill, and judgment that was acquired in the discipline-specific entry-level program.

In addition, the CAMRT’s Computed Tomography Imaging Certificate program offers continuing professional development opportunities for the nuclear medicine technologists to operate CT as related to PET/CT and SPECT/CT, for radiation therapists to operate CT for the purpose of treatment planning and for radiological technologists to operate CT for dedicated CT procedures.
